Texas is once again on the watch for the New World screwworm, a parasite that can be dangerous to livestock.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture said the screwworm was recently detected in Mexico within 25 miles of the U.S. border.

Federal officials say the pest is not currently present in the U.S. and the risk here remains very low, but Texas agriculture officials have been urging ranchers to watch their animals closely.
