CRAWFORD, Texas (KWTX) - In September 2001, the quiet town of Crawford, Texas-population seven hundred-suddenly became the second headquarters of the free world.
Prairie Chapel Ranch, purchased just two years prior, was President George W. Bush's "Western White House." But on September 11th, the peaceful town was thrown into panic on rumors the ranch was the next target.
Kirk Baird, former owner of the Coffee Station in Crawford, recalls that fateful day: "First, we woke up that morning and everything happened. Then we went to work and-I mean-there were vehicles peeling out to the ranch because they didn't know where the next plane was going to go..."A heavy security presence, including the Secret Service, would line Crawford's streets for years.
